Formation and characterization of Au/Pd surface alloys on Pd(111)

چکیده
The formation of alloys by adsorbing gold on a Pd(111) single crystal substrate and subsequently annealing to various temperatures is studied in an ultrahigh vacuum by means of Auger and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The nature of the alloy surface is probed by CO chemisorption using temperature-programmed desorption and reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy. It is found that gold grows in a layer-by-layer fashion on Pd(111) at 300 K, and starts to diffuse into the bulk after annealing to above 600 K. Alloy formation results in a 0.5 eV binding energy decrease of the Au 4f XPS signals and a binding energy increase of the Pd 3d features of 0.8 eV, consistent with results obtained for the bulk alloy. The experimentally measured CO desorption activation energies and vibrational frequencies do not correlate well with the surface sites expected from the bulk alloy composition but are more consistent with significant preferential segregation of gold to the alloy surface. 2007 Elsevier B.V. The formation of PdCx over Pd-based catalysts in vapor-phase vinyl acetate synthesis: does a Pd–Au alloy catalyst resist carbide formation?
The formation of Pd carbide (PdCx) during the synthesis of vinyl acetate (VA) was investigated over Pd/SiO2 catalysts with two different Pd particle sizes, as well as over a Pd–Au/SiO2 mixed-metal catalyst. XRD data show that PdCx was produced in the pure Pd catalysts after reaction based on the downshift of the Pd(111) and (200) XRD features. The smaller Pd particles showed greater resistance ...

It has been reported that Pd-Au bimetallic catalysts display improved catalytic performance after adequate calcination. In this study, a model catalyst study was conducted to investigate the effects of annealing in oxygen on the surface structures of Pd-Au alloys by comparing the physicochemical properties of Pd/Au(111) surfaces that were annealed in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) versus in an oxygen a...

متن کاملHydrogen Adsorption and Absorption with Pd−Au Bimetallic Surfaces
Pd−Au bimetallic catalysts have shown promising performance in numerous reactions that involve hydrogen. Fundamental studies of hydrogen interactions with Pd−Au surfaces could provide useful insights into the reaction mechanisms over Pd−Au catalysts, which may, in turn, guide future catalyst design. In this study, the interactions of hydrogen (i.e., adsorption, absorption, diffusion, and desorp...
